How it works, where it sits and what CPIM covers today.
Every building has a grid connection with a fixed ceiling. The figure is in the connection contract.
That connection also feeds the lift, the heating and the lights.
Whatever is left over is what the charge points can use.
One car on charge draws as much as several households together.
Ten charge points at 11 kW each ask for 110 kW together.
The demand grows with every new vehicle in the fleet.
A typical connection rarely offers that. Once they all charge at once, the fuse goes.
Load management keeps the sum below that ceiling. The charge points are throttled to achieve it.
The cars charge more slowly, and all of them charge.
Overnight, nobody notices.
A bigger connection needs approval from the grid operator. That takes time and money.
Many wallboxes bring load management with them.
They either agree among themselves or follow a controller in the switch cabinet.
That runs on site and needs no connection to the outside world.
A cluster from one product range, however, only governs its own devices.
Mixed installations need a controller that knows every charge point.
The electrician plans that in while the site is being built. The ceiling is set once and holds by itself afterwards.
The OCPP standard has its own messages for doing it from the backend. They are called smart charging.
Establish early on how much power your connection offers.
From a handful of charge points upwards, load management belongs in the plan.
A site without it grows only as far as the fuse allows.
Ask the manufacturer how many wallboxes one cluster carries.
How much a car draws is up to the car as well. Some charge single-phase at 3.7 kW, others three-phase at 11 kW.
The decision is made with the hardware. A backend can be swapped later, the switch cabinet stays where it is.
